Pressure cookers can help cook food quicker, but can also pose a serious danger. Companies make electric pressure cookers with various safety features to protect the user from harm, but oftentimes, these safety mechanisms may fail and cause injury to the user. At the Law Offices of Jason Turchin, we want products to be safe and not hurt our clients. If the product says it should not open when pressurized, it should operate without fail.
Recent reports have been made that Nuwave pressure cookers could be defective and explode while still under pressure.
On July 19, 2018, the US Consumer Product Safety Commission received a report from a customer who said her Nuwave 6Q Electric Pressure Cooker exploded while under pressure. The user said, “The lid blew off of my digital pressure cooker while under pressure. It blew off, hit the ceiling and the entire contents were spread about on the walls and floors throughout my kitchen. No one was hurt because we were in the other room, but this could have caused harm to myself and my 15 month old son.”
This could have been catastrophic if the child or mother were in the room when the pressure cooker lid came off.
Nuwave products are sold by NuWave, LLC, which appears based out of Illinois. Nuwave distributes the NuWave Nutri-Pot Digital Pressure Cooker.
Nuwave states on its website that its pressure cookers have a Sure-Lock® Safety System. It says that the Nutri-Pot’s Sure-Lock® system is “comprised of multiple independent safety features, making the Nutri-Pot the safest digital pressure cooker available today. Other digital pressure cookers have been known to open prematurely while still pressurized. Because safety is a core value at NuWave, you’ll never have to worry about that when cooking with the Nutri-Pot.”
These promises from Nuwave are strong statements of the product safety.
When a pressure cooker exploded, hot contents could fly out at a high speed and cause serious injuries. Some of the most common injuries that may be caused by defective cookers include the following:
In the most serious cases, injuries caused by defective cookers can cause blindness and life-threatening infections. Many pressure cooker burn injury claims have been reported from the Power Pressure Cooker from Tristar Products.
The Consumer Product Safety Commission overseas product safety for the Federal government. Companies are required to report certain injuries and issues with products which could harm customers. If you were injured by a defective pressure cooker, you may be able to make a complaint with the CPSC, and pursue a claim for compensation from the manufacturer.
